OUR SUMMER SHOW 2010

Saturday 19th June was the date this year for the Horticultural Society’s Summer Show. It was very noticeable this year that even more people visited the Show than on previous years, due no doubt to the glorious weather.
The Village Hall was crowded and for this reason progression around the displays took a bit longer, but the wait was worthwhile as the standard of the exhibits was excellent.
The contributions from the junior members were a bit down on previous shows but many parents are now encouraging their offspring to become young gardeners at home.
The Toosey girls club though did manage to furnish around twenty entries for their special classes, there being some stiff competition between members. It is considered now that some of them could do well in the main floral art classes.

The pictures above show a selection of the display tables with the last two frames showing two entrants receiving the prizes awarded for their exhibits.
The first is an illustration of what I said earlier that many youngsters were taking part – and wining in their class.

The Committee were delighted to welcome Mrs Jean Smith from a local farming family, to present the prizes and trophies.
Jean is known colloquially as the ‘Cycling Granny’ because of her years cycling round Britain raising money for charity.
In January 2005 Jean was in the Queens honours list, becoming an MBE for her charity work, which at that time had raised £22,773.55 for good causes.

She is also an active member of our Parish Council where she has special responsibility for development in the cemetery and chapels

Pictured below is a selection of some of the exhibitors receiving their awards from Jean Smith for their efforts on this day. One is inclined to forget that today’s reward is the result of much work in the preceding months.

A random selection of winners being presented with their awards - But there were as many again as well as those shown above

This young lady proudly showing her Nan’s success pointing to the award card. Next time it may be her own prize award?

A good day had by all.
