Amongst the periods when the village has suffered from severe weather conditions was the exceptional storm of 15th/16th October 1987 when hurricane force winds reaching at times 100mph, and following several days of heavy rain, blew across the region causing havoc in the South East of England.

| In St. Osyth the holiday caravan sites at the beach were struck and caravans uprooted and thrown about. The devices securing caravans to the ground, such as long metal spikes screwed into the ground like corkscrews, with chains attached to the vans, were pulled straight out of the rain sodden ground and the units thrown about as though no such security existed. |

One caravan, with a woman and three children inside, was lifted up, turned upside down, and dropped into the drainage ditch. Fortunately they were not seriously hurt apart from some cuts and scratches and a few bruises.
|
| Some caravans just disintegrated after the wind blew in the glass windows and the caravans exploded rather like a balloon bursting with the pressure of the wind now inside. Others just collapsed sideways, giving in to the force of the wind in the direction it was blowing. |
 | It is of note that this exceptional day for storms was followed by what became known as 'Black Monday' on the London stock market with record falls across the board announcing the end of a long bull run.
