PT13D Stearman N4712V Commentary Notes.
PT13D Stearman Owned and operated by Maurice Hammond, based at Airfield Farm Hardwick Norfolk. Specifications. Wing span 32FT, Length 25FT. Engine Pratt and Whitney R985 Single row wasp junior of 450 HP. Fixed Pitch ground adjustable Propeller, Fuel capacity 46 US Gallons History Constructed by the Boeing Aircraft Company of Wichita Kansas in 1942 Boeing Constriction Number 75-5094 United States Army Air Corps Serial Number 42-16931 The early history of this particular aircraft is still being researched, what is know is that the aircraft was operated by the Army Air Corps and originally fitted with a Lycoming R680-B4E engine producing 275hp. The aircraft was finally retired and put up for disposal at Hill Air Force Base Utah on 25th July 1949. N4712V was registered on 8th December 1950 to its first civilian owner, Transocean Airlines at Minter Field California and flew for the first time in civil ownership on 4th April 1951 at which time the aircraft had logged a total of 1616.30 hours. Willett Flying Services bought the aircraft in late 1952 and operated it for 9 months before converting it to E75 status with its current 450hp engine, modified brakes and electrical system, flying again on 15th January 1956. This conversion was very popular with crop dusters at the time, however there is no evidence within the airframe or log books to indicate that it was ever used as a duster. Willett continued to operate the aircraft until 12th May 1971 now with a total time of 2198 hours and later sold it to a new owner in Singapore where it flew again on 20th August 1976. During its time in Singapore N4712V logged just 63 hours before being imported to the UK in 1985. During February 2004 Maurice Hammond acquired the Stearman and it arrived at Hardwick from its previous Lands End base on a rather cold day at the end of March, now with a total time of 2327 hours. The aircraft currently wears a basic Army Air Corps colour scheme similar to the one it would have worn whilst in it Primary Training days.
