Commemorating the launch of the first commercial jet airline service.
“I’m leaving, on a jet plane....”

The familiar lyrics sum up the mood of the fifties when the world suddenly became a smaller place.  This series takes a nostalgic look at 50 years of jet powered commercial flight and also marks Britain’s expertise in aircraft engineering.

In 1952, the Comet took to the skies.  The first commercial flight was from London to Johannesburg on 2nd May.  The jet age had begun and many a young girl in Britain wanted to become an air hostess.

Besides the Comet, this series takes a closer look at the 1962 VC 10, the 1964 Hawker Siddeley Trident, 1976 supersonic Concorde and the biggest people carrier of them all, Airbus 340.
