The village celebrations for the Queen’s Jubilee will soon be here.  It was very sad news when we heard of the death of the Queen Mother who had wanted to see the celebrations for her daughter, the Queen.  Her husband, King George VI had reigned for over 15 years when he died suddenly on February 6th, 1952.  The Queen Mother had a wonderful 100th birthday in Millennium year and was still amazingly active.

There is a Jubilee diary for the village, with a variety of activities over the Bank Holiday.  The Friends of the Church are running a 50’s exhibition, in the church, from June 1st - 8th to bring back memories, with a special concert on the 8th.  There will also be a display of flowers.

Before this, on Sunday, May 5th there is Beating the Bounds.  There are articles looking back on how the custom used to be done, including bumping a new Vicar!   See the photo of the Rev. Curling, in 1911, with his surplice and mortarboard.  How about that, Martin?

We are continuing the theme of St Osyth Beach with an interesting description, by Ian Clegg, who has written his memories of childhood there in the 20’s and 30’s.  He returned recently to the beach and couldn’t believe the changes on both sides of the seawall.  Apart from the caravans the beach has been changed by the tides, where once there had been room for the chalets and wonderful sands.
Next month he describes the journey from London, by car, along the A12.  No by-passes and little traffic!  There are more unusual happenings on the beach now, as I write.
What were all the large pipes for, passing through the village?
