A MAJOR CASH AWARD FOR COWLEY PARK RECREATION GROUND

A view of Cowley Park playing fields on the Recreation Ground, looking from Mill Street by the War Memorial. Further to the left of the area covered by this picture is the village Children’s Playground, a Tennis Court in need of refurbishment and a young person’s Skate Park

This is the cheque, a ‘BIG CHEQUE’ in more ways than one!

Wednesday 21st March at 7.45 a.m. saw a very significant event take place on the Cowley Park Recreation Ground, in Mill Street. The St. Osyth Playing Field Charity had been awarded a grant of £44,418 by SportEngland through their Protecting Playing Fields Fund, part of the legacy from the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

This major award is to completely and professionally relay the football pitch and cricket outfield at Cowley Park. It is anticipated work will commence in September 2012.

SportEngland wish to make this grant award one of the feature events of a nationwide media launch to take place on the morning of Wednesday 21st March, hence the early start chosen by SportEngland to both suit young participants and to match events elsewhere in England.
Mark Shuttlewort who is the Chairman of the Cowley Park Trustee Board, invited attendees from the local community to be present to celebrate this grant with the Trustees , as it was expected the event would be filmed for publicity purposes by SportEngland

The above party consists of Bryan Mc Manus, Head of Youth Cricket, St. Osyth Cricket Club; Mark Shuttleworth, Chairman of Cowley Park Trustee Board; Adam Rigarlsford from SportEngland and Tom Moore, Coach St. Osyth Rangers Youth Football Club.

Mr Adam Rigarlsford, the Strategic Lead for SportEngland in Eastern England, about to present this most generous grant cheque to Mark Shuttleworth on behalf of his trustees and giving an introduction by speaking about the grants background, before formally presenting the cheque.

And this is what he was photographing, our youth sportsmen

Visitors and members listen to the award presentation speech from outside the pavilion.

SportEngland would like as many beneficiaries of this project, principally young people, to be present at this event. The early start has been designed to ensure that young people will be able to be present before school starts.

Mark Shuttleworth with his fellow trustees, SportEngland’s award presenter Mr.Adam Rigarlsford, invited local guests, including County, District and Parish Councillors and youth cricket and football team members.

Our Cowley Park Playing Field and Recreation Ground has won numerous awards for the quality of its facilities in the ‘Small village’ group of Parishes, but the very poor drainage of the football pitches and cricket outfield has meant considerable additional work being necessary to maintaining the Ground.
Mark Shuttleworth, who has been Chairman of the Board of Trustee since its creation, along with his fellow trustees have done an enormous amount of work on improving the facilities at the ground particularly for the younger sportsmen, but the Trustees successful application for this grant, which was supported strongly by the village response to the e-mail survey conducted on the Parish Web Site last November, must surely be seen as the culmination of all their work to keep Cowley Park as a premier sports facility, in the small village category in the County of Essex.
Congratulations to our village trustees, you are doing a remarkable job for us all and this grant is the icing on the village cake!
