6th April 2004 Entente Cordiale
The centenary of the Entente Cordiale (friendly understanding) between Britain and France is celebrated in April with a unique joint stamp issue.
The Entente Cordiale (1904) was a surprising diplomatic move, coming as it did after several years of colonial and naval disputes between the two nations. However, following King Edward VII’s warm reception in Paris in 1903, and driven by a mutual concern at the increasing power of Germany, both countries settled their differences and agreed to help each other. The Entente had an immediate impact on world events, forming the basis of Anglo-French co-operation before the outbreak of the First World War.
The pact also had an effect upon British and French culture. Essentially, a cross-Channel climate of fear, mistrust and competition was transformed, leading to an exchange of ideas in art, industry and commerce, to say nothing of the projects undertaken by the two countries together.
The Entente Cordiale Special Stamps are the first joint issue since the Channel Tunnel set in 1994. They feature designs jointly chosen by Royal Mail and La Poste, and will be available in a number of unique formats.
13th April 2004 Ocean Liners
This Special Stamp issue celebrates our proud heritage as a seafaring nation and maritime power. April will see a continuance of these great traditions with the maiden transatlantic crossing of Queen Mary 2, between Southampton and New York.
To commemorate this voyage there will be a set of six Special Stamps featuring Queen Mary 2, plus five great British ocean liners from yesteryear.
